I have to make a flight from KLHV to KPCW to bring my new bird home. She only holds 18gal of fuel and burns around 5gph(But don’t know the practical burn with this particular prop and carburetor setup). I’m planning 90mph TAS and 5gph. I have No ADS-B, No radio, No transponder, No electrical system.
Currently planning straight west for fuel at 29D, then continue straight west again to fly over 1G5 then NW to KPCW. This route takes me over familiar area once I’m near YNG and allows me to split the CAK Class C and CLE Class B.
Have to figure out how to post foreflight or sky vector data…

Good lord… my productivity just got cut in half today with this puzzle on my mind.
Alright, my first observation/opinion is that KAXQ seems like a better first stop than 29D.
- It will even out the distances of your legs more.
- Based only on its online presence, KAXQ seems like a nicer airport.
- KAXQ seems like it has better service and cheaper gas prices.

Based on it’s website, 1G5 (Medina Municipal Airport) seems wild.
It’s there official website according to AOPA.
29D is 2miles from being exactly equidistant so I don’t know how AXQ would help. As I see how fuel is burned, I may choose to stretch that first leg even farther. Thats a gametime decision.
AXQ being a “nicer” airport is almost a detriment to me. The weather is going to be nice so lots of people out and about and I don’t have a radio. All I can do is look out the window. Its threat mitigation. Does suck that fuel is more expensive
KLHV
1G5 = 196.9NM
196.9NM / 2 = 98.45NM
KLHV
29D = 124NM
124NM - 98.45NM = 25.55NM past the half way point
KLHV
KAXQ = 91.7NM
98.45NM - 91.7NM = 6.75NM before the half way point
I’m confused?
I’m not planning to stop at 1G5. It’s a landmark as guidance to split the CAK Class Charlie and the CLE Class Bravo.

Ahh that makes sense.
After reading closely, you do say “Fly Over”. I’m just so used to airports in the flight plan being used for landings. Plus I was thinking you would need to make at least 2 fuel stops for this trip.
Let me study this a bit more and try to find another hole in your thinking…
So if you did it right now, winds would put you at about 2 1/2 hours ish each leg.
That gives you more reserves than I was initially thinking.
You going to have foreflight up on the new iPad for extra spatial orientation?
Have to figure out how to post foreflight or sky vector data…
The link button on the upper right corner passes a lot of data on to the next person you’re sharing with which is great way to share routes. It’s definitely work registering with Skyvector to save these and other data for future uses like a lightweight foreflight.

Foreflight uses similar with the “Send to”

Why not at least a handheld? I did my tail wheel training in a Champ with just a handheld plugged into my headset and while it wasn’t required at the grass strip I was at, it sure was nice to at least have the ability to communicate and coordinate with others when traffic got busier.
I fully understand coming from the airliner world back to GA being cut loose from all that talking would be therapeutic.
On the seaplane episode we recorded I talked a lot about Lake Isabel out here in WA and how desolate it was being a mountain lake with extremely difficult access only for the most dedicated hikers. My realization that there was no cell phone reception and I had no satellite phone presented a never again moment.
A few months later after recording my friend went up there with his new-to-him turbo 206 on amphibs and had a very hard hit on glassy water trying to make the lake and skipping that whole concept of going around.
He collapsed the struts connecting the fuselage and one of the struts came through the floorboard injuring one his passenger’s legs. Luckily the thing was still able to nursed back to the small shoreline and the injuries weren’t life threatening.
It immediately presented a problem with getting help as they weren’t prepared to spend the night there and just by pure luck using 121.5 someone heard their SOS call and was able to relay it. Kenmore air was able to send out a Beaver for retrieval and extract them from that lake before the sun went down.
Few months after that they had to have the 206 airlifted out by a helicopter and it was just a huge shit show. The footage of the Huey hoisting a 206 over the Cascade mountains was impressive (and all I saw was dollar signs). Super glad they all survived that ordeal.

Long winded statement that I’d least bring a handheld with a headset connection. The cell phone reception is a big problem for me with mountains and I expect less of an issue in Ohio if you had to put the airplane down anywhere.
I was just really impressed with the real world example of a 121.5 relay working with someone I know personally and since then have made sure my handheld is at least in my flight bag.
It never occurred to me that SkyVector offered accounts… I’ll have to set one up when I get the chance.

I put off a registration for too long but when I was student Foreflight wasn’t as fully developed and Skyvector had the lead.
Super valuable for flight planning and checking my work when I was having to use those paper flight planners and checking my work against all the wind data/magnetic headings.
You can even brief and file real flight plans from Skyvector too!
I Second the handheld idea! I have mentioned that to @LeeGriffing in our private text a few weeks ago and he had a reason… I just don’t remember what it was.

I get no having it on all the time but at least having it available.
I hear more story’s like this than I would have thought!
Just watched a tragic story on AOPA about a 206 flipping in frigid water for my e-FIRC…
Absolutely gut wrenching, I think that one was in Washington state as well.
206 is one of my dream airplanes, so it always hits so close to home. I’m glad everything turned out alright for your buddy (relatively speaking).
An inReach mini with active subscription would be on my MEL for stuff like that.

I will get a handheld but don’t have one yet and its not a huge priority. I’m comfy without a radio but it is a consideration

If you are, do you have a mount for it yet? @LeeGriffing
Yep, I’ll have foreflight. SHOULD have own ship on there also for navigation, but not counting on it. I got the MyClipMulti Universal kneeboard. My first kneeboard of any kind. Seems like the perfect solution but we’ll know more tomorrow!
