Instrument Checkride Pass

First time go! Oral went smooth, he had zero negative feedback. My partial panel approach was a bit rough (LNAV minimums with AHRS failure using GPS CDI), but still got the ticket so moving on. I’m at 175 hours (80 of those in the last 90 days), so on to commercial time building. I’m trying to find a place to do tailwheel training to spice up the time build so if anyone knows of a company or person near Fayettevile North Carolina let me know!

And my first near emergency situation the day after… cruising at 6,000 feet engine RPM started dropping and sputtering, threw in carb heat, full mixture, full power. RPM maxed at 2500 and would sputter down to 1900 then back up repeatedly. If I even started to push in carb heat the RPM would drop substantially. Stayed at 6,000 until I was over the nearest airport and spiraled down to land.

I was in a C150, full tanks. OAT was around 50F.

Congratulations on the instrument rating!

That’s scary as hell! Any feedback from maintenance about what would be causing that?

Suspected carb ice. They’re going to check out the airplane today to double check, but on the ground it ran up fine, magneto checks were fine, no fuel contamination found.

Getting carb ice while in normal cruise certainly concerns me and is something I’ve never had happen, but I’m relatively inexperienced in the 150 which is prone to carburetor icing. Looking back at the flight now, I did notice slight drops in RPM but at the time I attributed it to possibly over leaning, so I gave a couple twists in on the mixture and it went back up. Clearly I should have thrown in carb heat earlier before the ice built up so bad that carb heat was ineffective.

Congratulations! It’s a huge undertaking, well done! What is next?

Thank you! I’m building hours for commercial, then onto CFI/CFII. I’m speaking with a company right now that offers tailwheel and high performance/complex training as a fun way to build some of the hours and get some more training value.

I already have the 10 hours in a TAA, but I’d really like the HP and complex

Didn’t realize you were 150ing it! Haha

yeah carb ice is probably what was going on with that O-200
