So I have a really Cruisey prop on my Super Cub. It does 105mph at 2300rpm. For only 90hp, pretty good. Looking to do a new metal prop, but not sure if I should stick to cruise, or bias more towards climb. What would you guys all do? And for general conversation: What do you appreciate more, Climb or cruise, how much would you sacrifice of one, to get the other.
Climb prop all day to get in and out of tighter spots.
Embrace the slow cruise speed vibes with your door open.
I think I’d agree with @TylerBrunkhorst. You already have an airplane that’s not going to set any speed records, so I’m guessing the journey is more important than the destination, so get to where you want to be altitude wise the quickest and then enjoy the journey that much more.
My initial thoughts (which I have shared with you in the past) is that you do not need the climb performance for any airports that you will be going to.
On second thought, you do not need the cruise performance for any of the distances you will be travailing either… so climb prop would be kinda fun…
(Also, @StuartButts great to see you back here!)
I’m surrounded by mountain terrain, a bazillion gravel bars, and other features that make a Super Cub shine. I’m biased towards the STOL flying as it’s pretty popular here and of course all the seaplane opportunities too.
Doubling down on climb prop.
Having all that right in your backyard makes the decision to use a climb prop a no-brainer…
Lake Erie Islands are short runways for some of the bigger GA airplanes, but for a super cub it’s a non issue even with a cruise prop.
But the distances are also so short it’s fine even with a climb prop.
I tend to agree, but I’ve now had two people who I would’ve swore would agree, are saying cruise all the way. So it’s giving me some thinking. Remember, this is only 90hp. No flaps. It’s never gonna do what those bushed out Super Cubs will do.
Are you opposed to a happy medium, or do you just want to go all the way in one direction?
So glad to see you back @StuartButts! It’s definitely not going to set any speed records, but don’t we always want what we have to go as fast as it can? I am pretty committed to going to a climb prop. I do have to give up some cruise for climb, but it’s about how much cruise am I willing to sacrifice to get the climb performance I want.
On the Climb side of happy medium is where I’m trying to be.
Less popping the flaps STOL fun, just getting the thing airborne sooner with that 90hp being the deficit.
I love the lack of flaps. Classic.
I’m sure you’ve seen Joe’s Instagram but its ripe full of filthy flapless cub action.
Holy cow… I clicked the link and apparently I have an IG account that I forgot about. @pilotground
I’ll have to fill out the details now that we have the forum running.
Yeah, I need the right prop to unlock the little power it has. It won’t slow down on landing either so landing is equally affected with this cruise prop.
It’d be interesting to see if someone has done some tests on the efficacy of a climb prop for the 90hp -18. I have nothing to support this, but I feel like it’d be too underpowered to see a substantial difference in performance. Metal prop would certainly be heavier. I say, if current prop is working for you, why change? Generally, I’d go with climb, but you can go too far. I have a 150hp with the McCauley Borer 82/41 and I think it’s a just a bit too much.
Welcome back @IanArendt The borer is too much what? Climb? I don’t want to be outside the TCDS limits but need more climb. I think its all relative… I have a 760lb bew and it only statics about 2050. With the 150hp, I think your range is a lot wider. Your climb is a lot more or your cruise is a lot more depending what you want to choose.
Ok I looked up TCDS and I now know it means “Type Certificate Data Sheet”… good to know.
Is 760lb how they measure a prop?
Is “bew” a brand of prop?
Is Static some sort of rpm measurement?
@IanArendt I also need/want more airbrake. Mine is too coarse, if you point it down at all, it speeds up. Which duh, but I’ve never seen anything like this one
Yes to all of the above. Care to ask what 90hp stands for?

I tend to agree, but I’ve now had two people who I would’ve swore would agree, are saying cruise all the way. So it’s giving me some thinking.
I meant to ask earlier, what are the arguments that they are presenting for a cruise prop?
